Learn about the history and evolution of swing music from Ralph Rosen. In this presentation he traces the development of early jazz, pointing out that written composition was as much a part of it as improvisation. This culminates in the “Swing Era” which was dominated by large ensembles called “Big Bands.” The swing players not only had to improvise but they also had to be excellent readers of written music just like classical musicians.
