Teen Library and Garden Interns - Apply online by May 15, 2024

We are currently hiring for the July to August 2024 session and the July to December 2024 session.

The Becket Athenaeum, employs multiple teen interns. Interning at the library is often a young person’s first job and we intend to teach skills that will be helpful in their future employment.

We are a vibrant library and community center for the towns of Becket and Washington. We have adult and youth programming, book clubs, and a varied selection of books, DVDs, magazines, music, games, museum passes, and more for loan. We are currently staffed by 4 paid professionals and several teen interns.

Intern tasks may include, but are not limited to:

  • check-in/out and shelve items

  • conduct catalog inventory (compare items on shelves to items in online catalog)

  • assist with Town of Becket camp (ages 6-12), after-school, & other children’s programming

  • assist with book sales, including setup and breakdown

  • Garden Intern: assist with maintaining gardens

An intern is expected to work at least 2 hours per week for the duration of the session and will be paid $15/hr. Occasionally, an intern may be scheduled for up to 8 hours in one week. Interns will work weekdays and some evenings and Saturdays. Library Interns report to the Head Librarian and Garden Interns report to the Cataloging Specialist. Computer proficiency required for Library Interns (both Mac and PC) and familiarity with, or ability to learn Google Suite.

A Massachusetts youth employment permit is required for anyone ages 14 to 17. The permit application requires a doctor’s signature based on a recent exam for 14 and 15 year-olds. Applicants younger than 14 will be considered for an Internship Trainee position which is paid an hourly stipend of $11/hr.

Internship sessions are January to June and July to December. A summer-only session, July to August, is also available. A current or past intern may apply for any session.
